VAN BURENThe Van Buren Education Association has filed charges against the Van Buren school board. The complaint, filed with the State Employment Relations Board, charges the district with bargaining in bad faith. On Aug. 20, the board voted to implement its last bargaining proposal. The board froze the salaries of all teachers, despite the union’s willingness to continue bargaining. A mediator has been working with both sides since June, the last meeting being Wednesday.“By unilaterally declaring ultimate impasse and implementing its most recent bargaining proposal, the board has engaged in bad faith bargaining,” according to the unfair labor practice filing. “The parties are not at ultimate impasse. All negotiation sessions held to date have been productive. The board gave no indication that further movement was not possible prior to its unilateral implementation. Conversely, the association had, prior to the board’s unilateral implementation, indicated its willingness to continue the negotiation process.”
