LIMA — If you have ever watched horse racing on television and wished you could be there to place a bet on your favorite horse, harness racing at the Allen County Fair is a good opportunity to do some legal wagering. The Allen County Fair features two days of harness racing at the Grandstand with two different types of racing, pace and trot, on both days.Pace and trot racing for 2-year-old fillies and colts will be featured on Wednesday. Pacers sway when they run — their two right legs go forward at the same time and then their left legs go forward. Trotters have one foot on the ground at all times. You may place a wager on each race with the payouts dependent on the pool size. “Some people will bet on one race and some bet on all of them at once,” said Denny Fricke, department manager for harness racing at the fair. “People in this area really support the harness racing,” Fricke said. “We have some of the best wagering in the state, and we have the highest in the region.” Two-year-old fillies and colts in the circuit will run Wednesday night. This will be followed by the older horses and the Dunlap Renner Memorial Pace. The Dunlap Renner race has been at the Allen County Fair for more than 15 years. On Aug. 25, the 3-year old fillies and colts in the circuit will race first. This will be followed by the Allen County Super Trot, a race that has been featured at the fair for 30 years.“We always have a good turn out of horses and have several divisions that we have to split,” Fricke said. Last year, post time was changed to 7 p.m. with success.“We changed the time of the harness racing last year to 7 p.m. and had a much better turnout,” Fricke said. “So we decided to keep both night's post time at
7 p.m. this year.”Fricke, who has been the manager for nearly 15 years, said all of the wagering is done now with computers so it goes really fast. “We have a building near the race tracks where you can do all your pari-mutuel wagering,” he said. “We just invite everyone to come out and enjoy the races. It really is a good time.”
