Mary Esther Beard, 94, died Jan. 2, 2010, at her caregiver’s home in Holgate.
She was born Oct. 15, 1915, in Chicago to Carl and Vernette Adams Hamilton, who preceded her in death. In 1940, she married Ray Anspaugh, who died in 1965. In 1974, she married Charles Beard, who died in 1977.
Mrs. Beard received her degree in accounting and was one of the first women in this region to hold a CPA accounting degree. She was comptroller for All Star Products, in Defiance, for 25 years. In addition, she also ran Anspaugh Accounting and did special case reviews for the IRS. She owned Anspaugh Accounting. She was an active member of St. Mary Catholic Church, Defiance. She was a volunteer for the St. Vincent DePaul Society.
Survivors include four nieces, Rachel Rogers, Cheryl Gillette, Alison (Bob) Michalak and Kathleen (Greg) Phipps; two nephews, Ted (Lois) Williams and Ed (Nan) Rogers; grandnephews and –nieces; a stepson, Charles (Sandy) Beard, of Defiance; and a stepdaughter, Nan Wales, of Defiance.
The family gratefully acknowledges her special friends and caregivers, Becky and Sam Harris, who cared for her well-being and enabled her to have independence for the last years of her life.
Funeral Mass will begin at 11 a.m. Tuesday at St. Mary Catholic Church, Defiance. Father Tim Kummerer will officiate. Burial will be in Riverside Cemetery.
Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday at Mast-Mock-Hoffman-Hanenkrath-Clevenger-Schaffer Funeral Home.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the St. Vincent DePaul Society or Defiance Visiting Nurses.
