LIMA — The Ohio State University has announced new parterships with businesses throughout the state, including here in northwest Ohio.

Starting this summer and running through June 2016, a total of 40 employers from throughout the state have created 180 new, paid internships and co-ops for OSU students, part of the Ohio Board of Regents’ Ohio Means Internships and Co-Ops, or OMIC, program.

“The grant money is allocated to companies who are creating these new internships,” Rachel Richardson, coordinator of career services at OSU-Lima, said. “It’s kind of an economic stimulus effort.”

As she developed the network of the seven local companies providing 68 out of the 180 total internships, Richardson noted that they were very eager to participate. In fact, out of the estimated $800,000 in intern wages this program will cost, $475,000 was provided by the participating companies.

“A couple of them have hired OSU graduates in the past,” she said. “They were very excited to create new internship opportunities.”

This program does not focus on a particular field of work, instead encompassing a wide vareity of vocations.

“It is very broad,” Richardson said. “It doesn’t focus on one career field or one major in particular.”

There are many advantages besides earning a paycheck for students seeking to become interns in the field, according to Richardson.

“One benefit would be targeted workplace training,” she said. “We have put together workplace training for the students. Some of the training is communications, teamwork, project development and those kinds of things. This also creates networking opportunities. You are meeting people in your field of study who can ultimately help you obtain a job after graduation. You’re meeting professionals and working and networking with them. According to the National Association of Colleges and Employers, a 2012 survey said that nearly 60 percent of students who participated in internships received job offers from those organizations. So along with the training and job experience, students can often get job offers from those companies.”
